Four days after their League Cup meeting, Newcastle United and Everton face each other again – this time in the Premier League. Monday Night Football at St James' Park closes matchweek 9 with an 8pm (GMT) kick-off on 2 November, and the stakes are clearer than the mid-table positions suggest: the winner climbs to seventh.

Thursday's tie went Everton's way. David Moyes' side won 3-1 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in the fourth round, with James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry on the scoresheet and Dan Burn only pulling one back late on. For Matthias Jaissle, the rematch is a quick chance to answer.

Where they stand

Both clubs have played a game fewer than most of the division, and only a point separates them (full Premier League table):

6Brentford9351+714
7Bournemouth9333+112
12Newcastle United8323−211
13Ipswich Town9324−411
14Everton8242−110

Three points would take Newcastle to 14, level with Brentford; a win for Everton would put them on 13, ahead of the cluster on 12. A draw leaves both in a crowded middle of the table, where only five points separate sixth place from sixteenth.

The numbers behind the match

  • Newcastle's defence: 14 goals conceded in eight league games, and no clean sheet at St James' Park in any competition this season. Newcastle have also faced 138 shots, more than any other Premier League side.
  • Newcastle's latest league result: a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace before the cup defeat.
  • Everton on the road: still without an away league win this season, and beaten 2-0 in each of their last two league matches, against Chelsea and Arsenal.
  • Recent history favours Everton: they won 3-2 at St James' Park in February 2026 and have now beaten Newcastle twice in a row.
  • Defensive leader: according to Opta figures cited by beIN Sports, James Tarkowski has won more duels (63) than any other player in the league this season.

Moyes is not reading too much into Thursday. "It's a different ball game, going to St. James' Park on a Monday evening," he said before the trip north.

Team news and expected line-ups

Newcastle remain without Tino Livramento (knee) and Ewen Jaouen (hamstring). Lewis Miley (muscle) and Matias Fernandez-Pardo (illness) are doubts, and Sports Mole also lists William Osula with an ankle problem.

Everton expect Jarrad Branthwaite to return after completing concussion protocols; he missed the Arsenal game and the cup tie. Jack Grealish is not available after being left out for a breach of club discipline, and the club has not given a timeline for his return. That leaves Moyes with a choice in central defence, where Jake O'Brien partnered Tarkowski on Thursday.

The line-ups expected by British previews (options in brackets):

  • Newcastle: Hornicek; Dedic, Thiaw (Schär), Botman (Burn), Hall; Joelinton, Gonzalez; Murphy, Willock, Barnes; Wissa (Osula).
  • Everton: Pickford; Rohl, Tarkowski, Branthwaite (O'Brien), Mykolenko; Garner, Hackney; Dibling, Dewsbury-Hall, George; Barry.

Our take

The cup result says less about this game than it seems. Cup ties follow their own logic, and a league game under the lights at St James' Park is a different setting from a knockout night on Merseyside. The worry is at the other end: a team that concedes as many shots as Newcastle cannot rely on being efficient forever, and Everton's mix of Tarkowski's aerial strength and Barry's movement is built to punish exactly that.

Everton's problem is the reverse. They are hard to beat – only two league defeats – but they have not turned that solidity into away wins. If Branthwaite is fit, the back line should hold up; whether Barry gets enough service without Grealish is the bigger question. Expect a tight game in which the first goal matters more than usual: Newcastle have yet to keep a home clean sheet, and Everton have yet to win away.
