For the first time in 16 years, Lazio sit alone at the top of Serie A. Gennaro Gattuso's side came from behind to beat Cagliari 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday – M'Bala Nzola put the visitors ahead after 20 minutes, Gustav Isaksen levelled before the break and Andrea Pinamonti struck the winner seven minutes from time. Combined with Inter's 3-1 derby defeat to AC Milan the night before, that result lifted Lazio three points clear after ten rounds.

Two round-10 games are still to come on Monday: Sassuolo v Fiorentina (18:30 CET) and Atalanta v Parma (20:45 CET). Neither can change the top five. Live standings: Serie A table.

Lazio: nine wins, one draw, no defeats

Twenty-eight points from ten games can only mean one record: nine wins and a draw. Lazio are the last unbeaten team in the league, and they arrive at the top in form – Sunday's win was their fifth in a row in all competitions, following a 6-2 rout of Sassuolo in midweek. According to Italian reporting, the last time the club led Serie A on its own was under Edoardo Reja in November 2010, and only Roma's 2013-14 side under Rudi Garcia collected more points from the opening ten rounds.

The Cagliari game also showed a different quality: patience. Lazio trailed for 16 minutes and needed until the 83rd to find the winner, but they did not lose their structure. Earlier in the season they went out of the Coppa Italia in the first round – which leaves Gattuso with a lighter calendar than most of the chasing pack.

The chasers: Inter stumble, Roma and Como keep pace

Inter had led the table before the derby, but Milan blew Cristian Chivu's side away inside ten minutes: Christian Pulisic scored after four, Adrien Rabiot after ten, both set up by Diego Moreira, who then added a free kick before half-time. Alessandro Bastoni's goal was Inter's only reply. It was their first league defeat of the season and Milan's fourth derby win in a row – a timely response after Milan's own first loss, 4-2 at Bologna in midweek.

Roma stay a point behind Inter after a 5-2 win at Udinese and still have the best goal difference in the league (+18). Como are the surprise of the top four: Lucas Da Cunha's penalty earned a 1-0 win over Venezia, their 23rd point.

Further down, Juventus eased the pressure on Luciano Spalletti with a 2-0 win over Napoli. Kerim Alajbegovic and Jérémie Boga scored with long-range efforts after Napoli's Luca Marianucci had been sent off. Juve move to 17 points; Massimiliano Allegri's Napoli have now lost four league games and sit 14 points behind the leaders.

Round 11: Lazio's first big test

The leaders go to Naples on Sunday lunchtime, and Inter host Como in a direct top-four meeting the same evening. After that, the league breaks for the November internationals.

Our take

Lazio's lead is real but narrow. Their run has come with a lighter schedule – they are out of the cup – and the gap is only three points over Inter, with Roma and Como within five. The trip to a wounded Napoli is the first proper test of whether this is a title challenge or a strong autumn. If Lazio leave the Maradona unbeaten, they go into the international break top, and the conversation in Rome changes. For Inter, the response against Como matters just as much: a second defeat in a row would open the race to five clubs.
