Everton have beaten Newcastle United for the second time in five days. Thierno Barry's goal four minutes after half-time settled Monday night's Premier League game at St James' Park 1-0 on 2 November, and Everton climbed to seventh in the table. Newcastle finished with ten men after substitute Jacob Ramsey was shown two yellow cards within a minute deep in stoppage time.

The win came four days after Everton's 3-1 victory over the same opponents in the fourth round of the League Cup. It was also David Moyes' side's first away league win since 28 February – which, as it happens, was a 3-2 win at the same ground.

How the goal came

The first half was even on possession, but neither side tested the goalkeepers. Everton had more attempts, without putting one on target before the break, and Newcastle's best moments came from distance: Harvey Barnes dragged an early shot just wide, and Joelinton went close from around 25 yards.

The decisive moment came early in the second half. Tyrique George shot from inside the box, Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek could only push the ball out, and Barry was first to the rebound to tap in. A VAR check for offside confirmed the goal. For the French striker it was his eighth goal of the season and his fourth in six matches, according to AFP.

Newcastle pushed hard in the last half-hour. Anthony Elanga hit the post, the ball rolled along the goal line and Everton scrambled it clear. Matthias Jaissle sent on Yoane Wissa, Jacob Murphy and Ramsey, but Jordan Pickford handled Wissa's late efforts, including a stoppage-time save with his foot. Ramsey's second booking, for a foul on Harrison Armstrong, came in the eighth minute of added time.

Key facts

  • Everton's week: two wins over Newcastle (3-1 in the League Cup, 1-0 in the league) after back-to-back league defeats to Chelsea and Arsenal.

Our take

This was the kind of game the preview pointed to: tight, decided by one moment, and won by the side that defends better. Everton were hard to break down again, with James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite – back after concussion protocols – holding the middle and Pickford reliable when Newcastle finally got shots on target. Barry did what a lone striker in a Moyes team has to do: stay alive in the box and finish the one chance that falls his way.

For Newcastle the problem goes beyond one result. Jaissle's team did not lack effort, but much of their threat came from long range or from crosses. With seventh place only two points away, the season is far from lost – but losing to the same opponent twice in five days, at home in the league, raises the pressure before Saturday's game against Fulham.
